The Feldenkrais Method

The Feldenkrais Method®, invention of  Israeli  physicist Moshe Feldenkrais, is a way of retraining the body. One mode of this retraining is Awareness Through Movement® classes.

Awareness Through Movement® classes consist of verbally directed movement sequences presented primarily to groups. A class generally lasts from thirty to sixty minutes. Each class is usually organized around a particular function. In Awareness Through Movement® classes, people engage in precisely structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Many are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities. Some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. The classes consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. There are hundreds of Awareness Through Movement® classes contained in the Feldenkrais Method® that vary, for all levels of movement ability, from simple in structure and physical demand to more difficult. Awareness Through Movement® classes attempt to make one aware of his/her habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and to expand options for new ways of moving while increasing sensitivity and improving efficiency.

Judi Clinton teaches Awareness Through Movement® classes and incorporates many Feldenkrais® movement methods in her therapy work and in the individualized homework she designs for each of her patients.

The distinguished scientist and educator, Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) earned his doctorate in Physics at the Sorbonne and later was an associate to the Nobel Prize laureate Frederic Joliot-Curie in Paris. He was also the first European to earn a black belt in judo and is credited with introducing the sport to the West. Upon suffering a serious knee injury, Feldenkrais was faced with a 50 percent chance for recovery and the possibility of confinement to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Unsatisfied with the prognosis and conventional treatments available, he embarked on exploring new relationships between the mind and body to improve physical movement and function. For 40 years, Feldenkrais developed an ingenious method for effective neuromuscular reeducation. Today, Dr. Feldenkrais's teachings are recognized as a dynamic methodolgy to improve neuromuscular control and biomechanical efficiency. There are nearly 3000 certified practitioners of The Feldenkrais Method worldwide.
